Preparing for Family Photos: A Guide to Creating Beautiful Memories

As a family photographer and a mom of four, I know exactly how much love and effort go into getting ready for family photos. You want these pictures to reflect the real spirit of your family: the giggles, the cuddles, the chaos, and the calm. You also want everyone to enjoy the experience. That’s where I come in. My goal is to make this process smooth and stress-free so you walk away with not just beautiful photos but beautiful memories too.

Choosing the Perfect Location

Location can totally shape the mood of your session. Some families feel most at home surrounded by nature. Think tall grasses, golden hour skies, and barefoot adventures. Others love the intimacy of an in-home session, where your toddler can show off their favorite toys or snuggle up on the couch with you.

I always help guide you toward locations that match your family’s style, energy, and comfort level. I’m constantly scouting for new spots that photograph beautifully and feel like an extension of your family’s story. Whether it’s the beach, a local park, or even your own backyard, we’ll find the perfect place together.

What to Wear

If you’re unsure about outfits, you’re not alone. This probably is the most asked question! The good news is you don’t need to go shopping or stress over matching perfectly. I offer styling support, and I’ve curated a small client closet with pieces that are photo-friendly and flattering.

Generally, soft tones, earth-inspired colors, and light textures work wonderfully on camera. Try to avoid bold logos or neon shades that can be distracting. Layers and accessories are great too. They add interest and movement without overwhelming the photo.

Most importantly, wear something that you feel comfortable in. If you’re relaxed and confident, that energy will come through in your photos.

Getting the Kids Ready

The truth is, kids don’t need to behave perfectly for beautiful photos. Some of the most meaningful images come from those spontaneous, in-between moments: the tight hugs, the cheeky smiles, the way your child wraps their arms around your neck.

Before your session, make sure the kids are well-fed, well-rested, and not feeling rushed. Let them know this is a fun adventure, not a performance. I’ll meet them where they are and follow their lead. I bring a calm, playful energy to every session, and I always leave space for breaks, snacks, or a moment to reset.

The Day of the Session

On the day of your session, take a deep breath and try not to worry about the little things. I’ll gently guide you through poses, but I also love capturing those candid, unscripted moments that show your real connection. If someone gets a little silly or runs off mid-shot, that’s okay. We’ll roll with it.

Family photo sessions with me aren’t about perfection. They’re about presence. Laugh, cuddle, play, and be yourselves. I’ll take care of the rest.

Let’s Make Magic Together

Preparing for family photos doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little planning, some comfortable clothes, and a photographer who sees the beauty in your everyday chaos (hi, that’s me!), you’re going to love the experience as much as the final gallery.

Ready to create something special together? Let’s chat. I can’t wait to meet your family.
